Seiko, a legendary brand created by a century of twists and turns

SEIKO can be said to be a fabulous and legendary enterprise. The development history of Seiko has been twists and turns, and it continues to experience the nirvana of the phoenix.

Seiko is currently the largest manufacturer and supplier of watch movements in Japan and South Korea, as well as the earliest manufacturer of finished watches in Japan. Born in the 1880s, it was originally named “Hattori Timepiece Shop”, and was renamed “Seikosha” in 1892.

When Seiko first took shape, the first disaster in Seiko’s history came. On September 1, 1923, the Great Tokyo Earthquake destroyed the only factory of Seiko headquarters. This is an unbearable and hard-to-recover disaster for any company, but Seiko has shown exceptional calmness in the face of the disaster. Only a few months later, Seiko started to resume the production of watches. As 1,500 watches were all damaged during the earthquake on the way to the factory for maintenance, Seiko paid all customers promptly after resuming production. And published an apology letter in the newspaper to make a sincere apology. Sincerity often touches people’s hearts the most. This move has enabled Seiko’s reputation in the industry to reach its peak, and even once became the endorsement brand of the “reputation” of the bezel.

But the disaster did not depart from Seiko. Twenty years later, in the Second World War, Seiko’s factory was blown to pieces, countless large and small earthquakes, and financial crises continued to wash away the strong stone of Seiko. Destiny seemed to be It must be polished to be indestructible.

Of course, the history of Seiko is not just a dangerous history.

In 1960, Seiko launched the world’s highest precision watch “GRAND SEIKO”, which is today what we commonly call “Seiko GS (Crown Blue Lion)”.

It was also from this year that Seiko modernized its production facilities, which runs counter to the traditional watch industry’s concept of “inheriting ancient techniques”, and it was this bold reform that allowed Seiko to be ahead of the world watch industry. The new production equipment allows Seiko to easily pass the Swiss timing competition and obtain the chronograph franchise for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. By 1965, Seiko had already owned the world’s largest automatic production line of watches and clocks at that time.

Won the first place in mechanical watches in the Geneva Observatory election in 1968

By 1969, Seiko produced the world’s first analog quartz watch “SEIKO ASTRON35SQ”. This also triggered the famous “Quartz Crisis Storm” in history.

In 1983, Seiko launched the world’s first quartz multi-function watch. In the following ten years, Seiko devoted itself to the “research on human kinetic energy”. In 1988, Seiko launched the world’s first human-powered electric watch. , And extended this technology in 1999, creating the world’s first man-powered electric multi-function watch.

After entering the 21st century, Seiko began to introduce its own research and development for decades of “spring drive” technology, this technology makes mechanical watches more accurate, stable and durable, can make mechanical watches accurate to 1s of daily difference, and provide 72 hours of power reserve Yes, this technology is still widely used in Seiko high-end serial watches.

At the beginning of Seiko’s establishment, there were only 15 employees in the watch factory, but its founder, Hattori Kintaro, did not give up his dream of creating a watch kingdom because of this. After countless blows, setbacks and tribulations became more and more courageous. Today’s Seiko has become an insurmountable “mountain” for many brands in the watch industry.
